Run the installer and open BackupOnShutdown. There is no account to create; the 14-day trial starts when you first use the app.
Pick the folders and a first USB stick or external drive. You can add more folders and more locations later. Add a password if the drive leaves the house.
It copies what changed, then shuts down. Save your work first: on Windows the shutdown is forced. If the backup fails or you cancel, the computer stays on.
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, or macOS 13 or later on a Mac with Apple Silicon.
A drive or network share with enough free space for your files: a USB stick, an external drive, a second internal drive, or a NAS.
Only needed if you start the app as administrator to include files other programs hold open. Everything else runs as a normal user. On a Mac, no administrator rights are needed; macOS asks once before the app may read your folders and drives.
